Many people have heard that the age of humans and dogs would have a correlation of one to seven, that is, one year of life would be equivalent to seven years of a human being. But is this really true?
The age comparison between species could be done in a simple way: a puppy 1 year would be equivalent to a 7 year old child and a more mature 7 year old dog would be like a 49 year old person. According to researchers at the University of California at San Diego (United States), this is not the case.
From the studies of the genomes of 104 Labradors, aged 0 to 16, scholars have identified “methylation patterns”, a type of chemical modification that can be observed in DNA, both in dogs and in humans, which indicates that dogs they age at different speeds and at different points in their life. This allowed for a more “real” comparison of the relationship between canine and human aging.

In fact, dogs age more quickly. But the most appropriate comparison for human and pet age should be associated with the furry’s biological clock.
From the similarities observed in the DNAs, the authors arrived at an equation that estimates the corresponding age between dogs and men. Scientists point out that until the age of 7 the dogs’ biological clock is faster, that is, a 1-year-old dog in human years would be 30. After the age of 7, the pace of aging slows down: a dog of 9 years old would be 65 if he were a human being.
This precision of the ratio of a canine year to human years helps when comparing the phases of the life of the furry ones, going through childhood, adolescence, maturity and old age.
But what do veterinarians benefit from having this kind of information? With data like this, it is possible to better understand the aging process of dogs, helping to guide the diagnosis and treatment of animals.
How to take better care of elderly dogs?
Like us, the elderly dog it is impacted by the arrival of mature age and it is likely that you have already noticed some of these signs. They walk more slowly, they don’t get up so easily on the couch, they don’t see or hear so well, they can get more sleepy and lazy.
But this stage of the pet’s life is also wonderful. Unlike puppies, they already know how to do the needs in the right place, they like affection better (they are more needy), they already have habits and are used to the routine of home. Therefore, they deserve a lot of affection, attention and care with health and well-being.

Beetroot: invigorates weakened animals because it is rich in sugars that are easily metabolized by the animal and readily used as energy, helping to combat fatigue and reduce muscle stress. Vitamins C and E are also excellent antioxidants and, therefore, have anti-aging activity.
Garlic: assists in the elimination of toxins, has a germicidal action and stimulates the immune system.
Artichoke extract: facilitates digestion, stimulates the liver and increases the release of bile. It promotes the elimination of toxins and the regulation of the intestine.
Seaweed extract (chlorella): rich in chlorophyll, improves the pet’s immunity. In addition, it promotes the detoxification of the organism and stimulates the growth and recovery of tissues. Due to this property, it can be used in cases of anemia (because its derivatives stimulate the formation of red blood cells).
Extract of citrus fruits (acerola): largest source of vitamin C and antioxidants, which help to strengthen the immune system.
