1. What does the profession of Petsitter consist of?
The job of a pet-sitter consists of take care of any animals when their owners cannot do it, I take care of dogs, horses as much as snakes, sometimes I keep them for 3 weeks or just a few hours.
I also have a few dogs who come to the house for the day when their owners are at work. The pet-sitter can look after the animals at home as well as at his own, he can also offer simple walks for the dogs.
2. How do you become a petsitter? Studies, training, career path
To become a pet-sitter there is no need for a specific diploma, however, it is necessary to very good knowledge of animals as well as their well-being. You also need the CCAD, certificate of domestic animal capacity, which can be obtained by passing it as a free candidate, but some schools, like agricultural high schools, issue it during the baccalaureate pro technician adviser seller in animal shops.
Otherwise, in terms of training, there are a few distance learning which offer “pet-sitter” training, but these are only training and not diplomas recognized by the State. It is also nice to take the training which allows you to obtain the license to keep categorized dogs, because there are a lot of really interesting things to learn! It is necessary above all to be passionate to do this job.
3. How did you get the idea of becoming a petsitter?
I have always been passionate about all animals for as far as I can remember. I had a lot of cats when I was young, but never a dog (because my parents didn’t want to). So I spent most of my time at the neighbor’s house looking after his dog, or reading hundreds of animal books.
Later, it was only natural that I did my studies in the animal world (pet shop), life meant that I did not find my place in this environment and I therefore worked everywhere at my Unfortunately, I miss animals a lot, I decided to start my own business and it was therefore without the slightest surprise that this job occurred to me.
4. What types of animals do you keep?
I keep absolutely all animals, dogs, cats, horses, fish, birds, small mammals, and even reptiles. I am also one of the few to keep dogs categorized, because no one wants them while I love them!
5. What services do you offer? Boarding, walks and more
I offer several services, home care, home care in a family pension for dogs, I also do walks and canine coaching.
6. Do you have an anecdote to tell us about one of your little boarders?
I have a rather touching anecdote to tell: one day, a lady contacts me because she absolutely needs to have her dog looked after. Problem, he was supposedly, very aggressive, not having the habit of condemning this kind of dog, I suggest that he come to my home to organize a meeting.
The big day arrives, the dog gets out of the car and indeed shows a lot of signs of aggression, so I take my distance and suggest that the owner walk a little with her dog. We walk… We walk and we talk, then as she spoke, I saw that the dog was relaxing and so was she. Without her realizing it, I found myself next to her without her dog flinching! We ended up sitting next to it, I was able to stroke his dog, take off his muzzle and walk him a bit without the slightest hitch.
In the end, his dog was just aggressive, because he felt the unnecessary stress of his owner, with work and time, this dog became a love, his owner is now relaxed and today I can keep him without the slightest worry home.
7. Every summer, many owners abandon their pets when they are on vacation when there are pet sitter solutions. What would you like to say about it?
I am very committed to the animal cause, I have been host family for a while and today I am inspector for associations, I go to the future families to check that all the conditions are met before the arrival of the animal, and I return there some time after the adoption checked that everything is going well, for the animal as well as for the family this prevents the animal from being abandoned again.
I also think that little is known about the profession of pet-sitter, it is a profession very often practiced by individuals and very little by professionals like me, the owners find it difficult to trust when it comes to the care of their proteges, the prices of stays in dog boarding can be very expensive and you rarely think of the possibility of bringing a pet-sitter to your home.
I would also like to say that labandonment is an abomination and that finally if the owners are able to get rid of their pet for a simple vacation, then it is beneficial for the animal to no longer be part of this family. I will end by quoting this very beautiful sentence which says that “For us the dog is a part of our life, but for him we are his whole life.”
8. Do you offer activities to your little residents? What kind ?
Yes ! I offer some activities to my residents, I have created excavation mat to keep them occupied when the weather does not allow them to play in the garden. I also have small swimming pools specials and refreshing mats for the very hot days, otherwise, I rent a agility field to be able to offer them even more games.
9. What does the dog coaching that you offer consist of?
I work in a dog ranch with an educator, where we welcome a lot of dogs 7 days a week, moreover, having studied this subject a lot, I acquired a lot of knowledge about dog training. The only diploma recognized by the State to have the necessary knowledge and to carry out the profession of dog trainer is the BP dog trainer, it is a very expensive training (8 000 €) that I did not prefer to do because, I did not find it essential since it is not the job to which I aspire, however most of my clients ask me for advice on the education of their dog, and, having enough knowledge to answer it. is for this reason that I offer them canine coaching ie advice, tips, behavior analyzes etc. to improve the dog / handler relationship.
10. Do you travel to France?
I travel to my area, however, I charge the mileage costs from 20 km therefore, for someone who lives further away and in France, it would be extremely expensive.
On the other hand, it happens to me to have dogs which come from very far, because their owners come on vacation in the region and deposit them to me on the spot. So they are not very far if there is a problem and the dog also has a great vacation.
